BUT i just gotta make it thru tomorrow becauuuse i’m going to YANKEES RED SOX AT FENWAY! i am so excited, this is one of the things I had to do in boston. mariel and i are going and we’re gonna try to not cause too much of a ruckus up in the nosebleeds!

its been a good while

Wednesday, April 26th, 2006

parents came up for easter and we did the boston stuff on sat. they seemed very impressed with everything (boston, me, my new boston-style driving, matt&mariel, dexter, etc).

Work has been ok, tho last night i was there til 7:30p. sometimes its a miracle that things get done.

i know im in the right “field” because when i am designing i am totally enjoying it – or am in a sort of enjoyable agony. the agony is when you are trying to design something that you just cant put your finger on, or when you have an idea in your head and feel limited by your skill or technology. the agony only goes away when you can put something that conveys the idea down on paper.

I’ve been working on some logos for the NAMI walk….and i’ve come up with quite a few, but i didn’t have any parameters to start with so my ideas are probably not on point. Mariel (understandably) can’t really explain to me what she wants to see in the logo, and since I never met Cailean its pretty hard for me to put him into it. SO its probably wise to “collab” with someone who knew Cailean, so I’m gonna take a crack at some of the ones matt came up with. the logo should probably use the mark of NAMI, and i really really detest the font and colors used in it. maybe i’ll propose an idea to them….but for a feeeeee (you should never do design work for free, even if you are a college student because your time and skills are just as valuable as any other designer)

obviously i don’t mean the logo. i’m happy to work on these logos because it gives me a chance to contribute something to an important cause close to someone i love and also because it gives me something creative to work on at work when things get monotonous .

SO tomorrow i’ll play around with some of matts ideas to see if we can put some ideas together. i’ll also post the other logos that i’ve done for mariel’s review.

a really good week

Friday, April 14th, 2006

Despite the lack of sleep this week, it has been one of the best ones at the globe so far. a designer was out all week, so I got to design a 2 covers, in addition to some inside spreads. much more creative stuff than i have been doing. also, yesterday i was asked to do a graphic for page 1 which is a pretty big place to start for never having done one before. i did it well, but missed a meeting that i was supposed to be at. whoops….so that kept my ego in check. and today i designed my monday living section front. (usually it is in b&w and folded inside city & region on mondays, but not this time). i’m sufficiently happy with how it looks. jane also gave me a verbal pat on the back which is always a good thing to get.

last night eileen, her friend katy, and i got some pizza from reginas in the north end and ate it on eileens roof deck. the weather was awesome and she has a great view of the city and the water. BUT i did have to pay $20 to park and had to restrain myself from attacking the parking attendant after he told me the price.

the parents are coming up this weekend….very excited to see them. they’re pretty cool.

things i’ve learned in boston

Wednesday, April 12th, 2006

1. drive like you own the place
2. leave early monday mornings bc the trains are always packed
3. somerville is where dreams go to die. replacing walmart.
4. watch out for little old ladies who steal your pants and undies at the ymca
5. I kinda love that dirty water
